If your sleep efficiency was rated at 50% during your sleep test, then it did take eight hours in bed to get four hours of sleep. I don't think all tests show sleep efficiency; my first one did and showed 33% efficiency. Basically, I felt like I could sleep all the time and never felt rested.
Anyway, to ncfirefighter, it is kind of frightening to know you stop breathing during sleep and no one is rushing to get your CPAP to you. However, the drive to live is strong enough that the body will go to great lengths to get you breathing again. If it makes you more relaxed about going to sleep, you might try sleeping in a recliner or propped up by pillows. Some people do that while waiting for their equipment.
