You're correct in that CPAP relies on nasal breathing to work.

During your initial recuperation you may want to try sleeping upright or elevated. This may help keep your tongue from flopping back as much.

During my recuperation from MMA (aka bilateral sagittal osteotomy) I slept upright since my nasal passages were extremely congested. It definitely helped, although your mouth will get mighty dry.

You might try posting in the Non-CPAP forum. I haven't seen SARPE posts there, but I have seen them on the Yahoo orthognathic forum.
