I’m trying to gather my thoughts about piercings, without passing a value judgment. Piercing of the tongue, cheek(s), or nose – unlike piercing the ears or earlobes – interferes with the functioning of these organs. For instance not only can air leak through pierced cheeks, but so can foods and beverages! If you smoke, tobacco fumes can also exit that way (but you have no business smoking anyhow!). A pierced tongue can interfere with chewing and or swallowing. It might not in some cases, but it certainly can. A pierced nose would probably not interfere with ordinary breathing, but it certainly can adversely affect anybody using respiratory equipment of any kind.
