First, you have to have adequate diagnosis as to the type of apnea you have, obstructive, central, mixed. Then you have to find the most likely cause, tongue base, upper palate, nasal obstruction, nervous system. You must then select from several treatment options right for you. This is very individual based on what you can be happy with.
Depending on the type and cause, there are treatments and (dare I say it on this forum), cures. Treatment for obstructive is some type of flow generator (cpap, bipap, autopap). Oral devices are also effective in a certain portion of the "afflicted". These are treatments, remove them and the OSA recurrs. Mandibular advancement is a cure, for some people (it dropped mine from 60+ to 0). Some of the soft tissue surgeries are cures but for a smaller percentage of the sufferers.
For central apnea, the treatment options are even fewer. Some times cpap helps other times in adds to the problem. Oxygen may help for a few people, others it doesn't do a darm thing.
Part of the responsibility of having the problem is up to each individual to research with a phyisician and find the cause and cure/treatment that works for them.
