Obstructive Apnea (Epiglottis)

Posted by Jaden's Mom on February 02, 2006 at 17:03:53:

My preemie that is now 7 lbs 6 oz has been in the neonatal intensive care unit, since birth, for obstructive apnea. His epiglottis is floppy and occasionally (few times a day) clamps down obstructing his airway causing his heart rate and oxygen sautration to plummet. A light jostle brings him out of it but doctors feel it to potentially fatal to take him home. On valentines day he will be four months old and still the doctors are in the guessing phase of how to remedy it. Sleeping on the stomach, sleeping on an inclined surface, and CPAP have been tried. Any suggestions of how to fix this? They said he will out most likely outgrow it but I can't handle being at the hospital until he does. We are staying at a ronald mcdonald house to be near the hospital and are 2 1/2 hours from home and our other children. A nervous break down is sure to come soon. Any suggestions are welcomed.
