I think you have a good idea about a stent. I was thinking about electromagnetism. Could a coil be wrapped around the throat and magnetic repulsion be used to keep the throat from closing? Sure. Why not? What about liposuction using microcanulas to remove fat from within the tissues and make them less prone to colapse. There are all kinds of things that could be done. Imagine if they got some NASA guys on it, gave them a billion dollars (only a fraction of the 85 billion announced today for Iraq by the way), and see what they could come up with.
