You are correct, there are many situations. One of the factors believed to impact the length of time before one sees improvement is the amount of sleep debt incurred before treatment is started. It is thought that you need to be getting 7-8 hours of good sleep with the CPAP before you start making a dent in the debt. Some posters have reported that sleeping without the CPAP for even an hour or two in the early morning sets them back. I know it's discouraging, but keep working at it and try to put your mask back on after the five hours. I've been on PAP for four years and I still have some bad days, but life is definitely better.
