Weight loss is one of many things that contribute to (but don't cause by themselves) OSA.
Weight loss CAN help, but it generally does NOT eliminate OSA. As buckthorn said, there are plenty of folks with OSA who are not overweight at all.
OSA probably has more to do with the TONE of the throat tissues than actual weight. And unfortunately, age tends to contribute to loss of tone in all tissues. This is why OSA shows up in many "normal" weight people as they get older - the throat tissue tone just drops below a certain level.
If you aren't getting exercise and your weight is high, then it's certainly worth a try!
But for most of us, CPAP is the only thing that makes a big difference. You're not the first person to have a hard time keeping the mask on. Probably 99% of people on here can relate to your experience. The key is to figure out what you need to do to make CPAP more comfortable for you. Your hospital may not be the best source of information - this site may be much better.
