Burn on face

Posted by thelawguy on February 15, 2006 at 10:07:57:

This is my first post, so please be kind.

I have been using a Fisher-Paykel CPAP (with humidifier) with a flexifit full face mask for about two months. Last week, my doctor increased my pressure from 8 to 10. I usually use the medium size mask, which has always worked quite well. With the new pressure, however, I have constant trouble with it leaking. Last Saturday night, I thought it might work better with a small mask because I wouldn't have to make it so tight. It did seem to work and went to sleep without experiencing any leaks.

When I woke up the next morning, I noticed a quarter-size red blister-burn next to my nose (which would have been about where the edge of the mask sat). It was very red, swollen, and was leaking fluid most of the day. Now, it is crusty, somewhat like the after effects of a bad sunburn. I have never had this before, not even when I used the small size mask when my pressure was 8, which I did for a small time before switching to the medium size.

I also have a red mark on my nose, though it is not swollen. What could have caused this? I assume it was a combination of the increased pressure, the small mask, and, perhaps, the heat from my humidifier. I will definitely use the bigger mask from now on. Any suggestions on what may have happened and what I can do in the future. I have heard of people getting sores, but never burns and blisters.

Thanks.
