I have a GoodKnight 420S and it makes the exact same noise you talk about. I have read one or two other posters here make the same observation about the GoodKnight product. The noise doesn't bother me. I don't get the odor you mentioned.

I travel often and the small size and automatic muti-voltage setup is appealing to me. Overall I like this machine. I'll probably buy a new autopap later this year and I plan to look at Respironics machines before I buy.
