Typically diabetics lose a great deal of weight prior to diagnosis. Upon diagnosis and effective treatment, they usually put back some of the wieght that had been lost.
Dr. Dement did report in his book that study subjects who were deprived of sleep did see an increse in blood sugar from the normal range to the "pre-diabetic" range. Because of this and other findings about sleep deorivation, it is not ethical to repeat these experiments. While perhaps not definitve, this does establish an association between sleep derivation and blood sugar.
