If you're sore from nasal pillows, siwtch to a mask, if you're sore from a mask, switch to nasal pillows. Some patients may do best by switching back a forth (when you get too sore from one, switch to the other).

I also found that it helps to put Boroleum of Vaseline on the sore spot before the mask goes on. Since I've been doing this a lot, and the part of the mask that gets the Vaseline or Boroleum on it does not deteriorate any faster than the rest of the mask, I can conclude that these products do not shorten mask life, at least not if you wash the face piece every morning.
