Had sleep study, results confusing

Posted by ArtistMonday on March 03, 2006 at 11:55:56:

I don't know what all this means but I just picked up my sleep study results this is what it said…

SLEEP SUMMARY:
1) Sleep Time Statistics: The total sleep time was 331 minutes. Total sleep time non-REM 244 minutes. Total sleep time REM 87 minutes. Sleep latency was 19.5 minutes. Latency to persistent sleep 25 minutes. Sleep efficiency was 77 percent. Latency to REM sleep was 169.5 minutes.
2) Sleep Disruption Events: There were 169 arousals with an arousal index of 30.6.
3) Sleep Stage Statistics: Stage 1 was 17.8 percent, Stage 2 was 36.7 percent, Stage 3 was 18.3 percent, Stage 4 was .9 percent, and Stage REM was 26.3 percent of the total sleep time.

EKG SUMMARY:
Steady wake heart rate was 87 beats per minute. Steady sleep heart rate 81 beats per minute.

RESPIRATORY ARCHITECTURE:
1) Event Statistics: 23 apnea, 215 hypopnea, AH index of 43.1.
2) Oximetry Statistics: Mean awake oxygen saturation was 92 percent, minimum saturation was 80 percent
3) Body Position Statistics: Supine AH index was 4.2. Son-supine AH index was 0.
4) Respiratory Events: In addition to AH events there were 0 snore events and 5 RERA events for a total respiratory disturbance index of 44.

LIMB MOVEMENT SUMMARY:
There was a total of 0 PLMS jerks for a PLMS index of 0. PLMS index with arousal was 0.

Then in the Short Report (Final) it says that pre-prescription I had:

6 Non-REM Obstructive Apneas
214 Non-REM Obstructive Hypopneas
and
0 REM Apneas or Hypopneas

and post prescription I had:

9 Non-REM Obstructive Apneas
1 Non-REM Obstructive Hypopnea
and
8 REM Obstructive Apnea
0 REM Obstructive Hypopnea

I also had 3 Isolated Non-Arousal REM jerks and 1 Isolated Arousal REM jerk.
And out of the 331 minutes that I was asleep, I only spent a total of 87 minutes in REM and that was only after the cpap had been administered.

So, if anyone can interpret this any better for me, I'd really appreciate it. Basically, all I really know is that I have severe sleep apnea and I need, need, NEED my cpap machine.
