Everybody has opinions. In following many forums, some docs have the attitiude yours does.
Others have very different opinions. This usually depends on their experience.
2 things immediately stand out on your readings.
First, the range is MUCH too wide to be effective.
If the lower is at 4 then you will have many apneas in this chasing your tail analogy. He is right there, but I would think s/he would advise a much narrower range.
If he s/he thinks 12 may be the correct for whatever reason, then the range should be somewhere 8/13 since there is so little above 11..
If s/he is interested in straight cpap, then it can be set to that pressure by using the upper and lower setting to the same.
You did not say if you are getting your own readings or it is being done by the doc or dme.One thing that is very clear with those who have much more experience with apap is that there is a very wide range in expertise of sleep docs. Sometimes it is scary.
In any event, the accumulation of data can provide much more objective data than an occasional visit to a doc with your symptoms as his/her only criteria.
It us your health. Educate yourself.
