I had exactly the same problem several years ago, along with a lot of restless and disturbed sleep. I took temazepam for a few months, which really settled me down and allowed me to get good restful sleep for the first time in years. It's not a permanent solution because the good effects tend to go away after a while and temazepam can be midly addictive. There may be better meds available now, but it worked wonders for me short-term.
