Slow day on the other board, so I found this thread here that intrigues me...

The association between OSA and morning headaches is well known and well described. Too much CO2, too little O2 can both lead to blood vessel dilitation in the brain...and whamo, the morning headache.

After my surgery that fixed my sleep apnea, I noticed that not only did I not have my morning headaches, but I also stopped having my periodic migraines (which I've had since I was a teenager). Now, over a year since my surgery, I almost feel as though I can throw away my Imitrex migraine meds ! I've had only one last year when I came down with a viral illness...compared to at least 4 or 5/ month pre-surgery.

In retrospect, I have probably had OSA for the last 10-15 years...formally being diagnosed 3 years ago.

I think there might be some correlation between OSA and migraines. Precisely how, I'm not certain.

If I knew my surgery would cure me of my headaches as well as my OSA, I would've signed up much earlier.

PS. There is a strong association between migraines and an ASD (a small hole between the top two chambers in the heart), especially in women. This has been brought to light more so in recent years since this hole can be closed without surgery in cath labs by cardiologists.

It may be possible that the increased right heart pressure seen in people with chronic, severe sleep apnea can cause air or particulate matter to cross this hole and course up to irritate the brain (more often than believed).

When the hole is fixed, the headache goes away...but those patients still have sleep apnea.

It might take multiple problems to link these two conditions. Hmmmm...
