Hypopnea/Apnea

Posted by learningaboutSA on March 21, 2006 at 17:37:12:

Hi, a new CPAP user here...

I just received my two sleep study reports and I have a few questions I was hoping some of you might help me with.

First, what is the difference between Apnea and Hypopnea?

Second, when I had my CPAP study (that's titration right??) with the CPAP set at 15-16, I am still having an RDI of 48 per hour - my total Apnea episodes are 62 (that's what is says - I hope that means for the night!) - and total hypopneas are 225.

These sound high to me while using the CPAP. Does that mean I'm buggered? In other words, while using the CPAP at 15-16, it is still not working well enough to make me healthy?

I mean, it must be somewhat better, because before my Apneas were 91 per hour.. but it sounds like the CPAP isn't enough - am I right?

I don't understand this darned sleep study result. It's like trying to figure out a new language. thanks for any light you can shed on this for me.

Janet
