Dead Space

Posted by dunibug on March 24, 2006 at 13:23:29:

Hi, I have mixed disease (central and obstructive) with irregular breathing (cheynne's stoke - sp?). I've been on bipap treatment for about 2 yrs. now. My titration is at 18/14. I just recently had another sleep study and apparently I hyperventilate when I sleep. The doctor's wanted to supplement the bipap with oxygen and I said no. I'm only 38 and I feel it's too young to do something so drastic without exhausting other alternatives. They are sending me on another study in about a month to try a dead space technique where I will be rebreathing some carbon dioxide that I exhale.

Is anyone familiar with this and/or hyperventilating while sleeping? Is there anyone out there that has severe mixed disease like me who has had some success with bipap or other alternatives?

The bipap has made a huge difference in that I don't fall asleep at work while typing. However, I still have no more energy than enough to get through the work day. My weekends are spent with the majority of the time getting more sleep.

Any alternative forms of treatment that anyone has would be appreciated. Accupuncture, hypnosis etc. I'm interested in the plastic they slide into your palate to make it more stiff.

The treatment process at first worked so well, but has since plateaued and not really improved. I am overweight and it continues to worsen with the complete lack of energy. It's like a vicious cycle downward.
