4-year perspective

Posted by Bill in ATL on March 29, 2006 at 10:58:42:

I've been on APAP now for 4 years, and thought I'd take the occasion of having just upgraded from an NPB 418P to the PB 420E to check back in with this group.

From the time I got my first CPAP, I've not spent a night without a machine. The treatment has worked remarkably well for me -- especially since I got my first auto CPAP.

Being a member of this group had everything to do with my making an easy transition to living with CPAP. From day 1, I've also had a heated humidifier, which I wouldn't have known to ask for without the knowledge I gained here.

A poster named Perry gave me a great deal of personalized help in sorting through APAP machines to find the one that suited me best. Because a large contributing factor in my case was diagnosed as flow limitations at the sleep lab, the Puritan Bennett machine was what I selected.

With the Silverlining software that came with the unit, I learned very quickly what I was up against, as I downloaded the previous night's recording every morning. The visual look at my sleep history gave me invaluable insight, and ultimately, acceptance of my OSA and the treatment.

I am now marveling at how my breadbox-sized 418P has morphed into a tiny and effective machine, the 420E, that will now be my traveling companion -- replacing my F&P HC220 CPAP (which has also been an excellent machine).

As far as masks go, I started with the Resmed Mirage Ultra, and after having tried a dozen different ones, found that the evolving Resmed masks have always worked best for me. I'm currently using the Resmed Activa.

To tell the truth, my APAP, humidifier and mask have become so ingrained in the fabric of my life, I don't really think about them anymore.

I haven't posted here in several years, and just wanted to let those of you who do post, that you are doing an invaluable service to those who need the information you are so open about discussing here.

I wish for everyone here as successful a resolution to their OSA as I have found. And thanks to Sandman and all of you!
