Those who suffer the most severely from OSA are those most likely to be compliant with treatment. The reason for this is somewhat obvious; those who suffer the worst will experience the most dramatic and noticeable relief. Those who suffer less severely might not notice the relief at first.
However, this should not be interpreted to mean that those who suffer from “mild” OSA cannot benefit from CPAP.
Furthermore, determining severity is somewhat of an art rather than a science. Current indices of severity are (1) number of episodes, (2) duration of episodes, (3) apneas are considered to be more serious than hypopneas, and (4) blood oxygen desaturation. At present, the setting of the pressure that it needed to treat your Apnea, and just how “sleepy” you are, are not considered measures of severity. This may change in the future.
