Wow! I'm really fascinated that the humidifier debate still goes on.

Just a recent personal experience: when I got the new 420E, I needed a new connector I didn't have that bridges the inner tubing of the APAP hose from the humidifier over to the APAP itself. So, I used it the first 3 nights without humidification.

The result was still good sleep with no apneas, but my nose and throat were really scratchy and sore by the third morning.

When I added the new tubing and got back to the humidifier the problem went right away, so I'm back to normal.

I follow all the advice about having the humidifier lower than the bed, using a double-insulated sleeve from CPAPMan on the main hose, and new distilled water nightly. No problems ever with rain-out, fungus or infections. And again, this is all good stuff that I learned here first.

I will say that I keep the heat relatively low on the humidifier, and that perhaps a pass-over humidifier with no heat would work as well for some people.
