My sleep center was very helpful in procuring a CPAP machine within my insurance coverage back in 1999. I did not have a dime out of pocket. There was a DME place two blocks from the sleep lab, but they warned me in no uncertain terms not to go there if I can help it! They ordered it (not from there) on a Tuesday; it was delivered that Saturday (could have been earlier if I had taken off from work). The lady from the DME came to the house and demonstrated how to use it.

When I needed to replace the machine in 2005, that particular DME no longer was doing CPAP. After getting the runaround from the preferred DME’s on my insurance, I ordered from an off-plan DME (mail order from the internet). Instead of a 10% co-payment on $1,700 from the preferred DME, I had to make a 30% co-payment on $500 (which is actually less)! You have to wonder what’s going on!

That being said, they don’t come to your house and make sure everything is set up right; the machine is simply shipped to your house. However, as a six year CPAP veteran, this was just fine.

As far as the sleep center also being the supplier of the CPAP machines, I agree that there’s a conflict of interest. There may not be anything sinister going on, but it doesn’t pass the “smell test!”
