Trust me, you are not incubating bacteria in fresh distilled water. White vinegar alone is sufficient for cleaning. There are many other things that are more likely to be going on.

How much water is used every night? Should be at least half the water in the chamber, if not more. The mucous membranes are more likely to be irritated and responding negatively to insufficient humidification.
