Please keep the appointment for the sleep test. You may want to call the sleep lab and ask to be on a standby list in case of a cancellation.

Anyhow, the fact the he so readily agreed to a sleep test indicates to me that he is interested in solving the problem (instead of denying it). It also tells me that he’s open-minded, and, therefore, likely to be CPAP compliant.

The newer machines are very quiet; the noise that they do make is sort of a “white noise” anyhow. To make it even quieter he can place the machine on a low table (best to avoid the floor) so that it is on his side below the mattress.

Most patients who use CPAP, especially at higher settings, find that a heated humidifier is very helpful. Therefore, you may wish to consider a model with a built-in or integrated humidifier. These units are no more expensive and no heavier or bulkier than a CPAP + a separate humidifier. They are much more convenient for travel. I travel with mine, as missing a night is not an option (it would make for a miserable vacation).

Lastly, I agree with the other posters that he’ll probably be a lot less restless when he gets his CPAP. The problem is largely that he’s sleeping so poorly. However, the twin bed idea is not a bad one. If he still kicks punches and rolls, you can just separate the beds and at least sleep in the same room.
