MMA is maxilo-mandibular advancement (aka bilateral jaw advancement). When a person is correctly diagnosed that the base of the tongue and a small airway is the root cause for the obstructive component of sleep apnea, this surgery may be performed. The upper and lower jaws are surgically broken and moved forward. This pulls the soft tissue of the airway and the base of the tongue forward opening the airway. In my case, the airway increased from 5mm (the size of a 22 caliber bullet) to 17mm. I have not awoken due to choking in over two years and the obstructive events went from 60/hr to 0. Pain was less than expected and overall it was well worth the time and money spent. No longer attached to a machine. Check out the non-cpap forum for more info.
