In the mood for a theory about this? I'm no rocket surgeon, but here goes:
It seems to me like there are 2 different types of sleepers: Those that are very sensitive light-sleepers, and those that can fall asleep anywhere, anytime and snore through anything.
The light sleepers are very sensitive to airway problems and it keeps them from getting into deep sleep. The brain learns not to go into deep sleep to prevent the airway from completely colapsing. No desats, mostly hypopneas, but severely fragmented sleep, fatigue, depression/panic attacks/anxiety, disturbed digestion, etc.
The heavy sleepers are not very sensitive, they go into deep sleep, snore like crazy, have low 02, their airway closes off which wakes them up to repeat the cycle but they don't remember. Nocturia, headaches, hypertension, fatigue, etc.
Same mechanical airway problem but 2 different responses. CPAP should help either.
