When you have sleep apnea, the normal result is a desaturation of the oxygen levels in the extremities. As the body detects this drop, the heart works harder to pump more oxygenated blood to these areas. The heart is a muscle. When a muscle works harder, it grows. This is okay for every muscle except the heart. As it gets larger, it becomes more ineffecient and creates other problems.
