Ok, an "arousal", in this context, means that you popped out of sleep, even for a short period of time. Sleep is identifed with the sensors as a certain type of waveform. This doesn't mean that you remember waking up, or that you made big physical movements, etc.
You can have arousals for many different reasons including breathing disruptions, pain, temperature, sound, movement of a partner, neurological issues, etc.
Index is the quantity per hour.
So, the term "arousal index" by itself doesn't specify the cause, just the frequency.
Many Drs would disagree with the following, so beware: I believe it's possible to have highly fractured sleep due to breathing disruptions that don't technically meet the definition of apneas or hypopneas. Some people appear to be very sensitive to breathing disruptions.
