Obviously, you can pour any fluid you want into the humidifier. Distilled water contains the least impurities, and should keep your containers and hoses clean the longest.
I know that in my dehumidifier, the water condenses on the evaporator, which is a series of aluminum or brass plates. Soldering was done with lead based solder. The amount of metal that would be picked up would depend on the acidity or alkalinity of the water condensing (most likely acid, since that is what the rain is around here).
My other concern is that without refrigeration, mold and mildew would build up quickly - probably 24 hours at the most.
This is based on conditions in Maine, for what that is worth.
Filtering might work, but bacteria in the water would not be destroyed.
Best bet would be to distill the water, which kind of destroys the whole point, doesn't it?
