In an emergency you can use any potable water (and possibly some non-potable varieties). However, if you live in the U.S. or in Canada, and are not desperately poor, distilled water is available at a reasonable price. If you live elsewhere, I’m not sure about the availability of distilled water.
If at all possible, you should use distilled water to prevent mold and mildew, and avoid any staining, deposits, or odors that might be caused by impurities. Under no circumstances should you use “distilled water” from a petrol station, because this water generally contains battery acid!
As to the posting that said that the water chamber is sealed with lead-containing solder; I’m sure that this is not the case! That is, unless an unauthorized repair was made! If such a repair was made, I highly suggest that a replacement be ordered, that the fastest shipping possible be requested, and that the lead-contaminated item be destroyed (not just discarded) immediately!
