The humidifier should not burn out no matter what! There should be a safety cutoff, for one thing! Also, did you use up all the water before this happened?

Another thing; use a good power strip, at least at home (many not be practical for travel).

I always run the humidifier (which I always set on high) to dry out the entire assembly after awakening in the morning. I frequently forget and leave it on for a while. Nothing bad has ever happened!
