I can open my mouth wide, talk, eat, etc, with my VPAP II ST-A on. It might be I have just adjusted, since I wear it 24 hours a day.

You just have to learn where to put your tongue to block the air from coming out of your mouth.

I go to the dentist and wear my VPAP the whole time. We tape the hose up and out of the way, and she can still get to all of my teeth while I am blocking the air from coming out of my mouth using the back of my tongue. It just takes some practice, but it IS possible. Try opening your mouth with the machine on, and curl your tongue back to block the air. That is the easiest way to learn how, and once you get the hang of it, you can start moving your tongue all around while using just a small part of the back of your tongue to block the air - thus allowing you to eat and talk without the air coming out of your mouth.

I have a harder time controlling the air flow when I am using a volume ventilator, but I can still do it, I just have to concentrate harder.
