Neuropathy is a condition that can be caused by several different conditions. The most condition that causes Neuropathy is Diabetes.

Other conditions that can cause Neuropathy include Spina Bifida (all three types, with Spina Bifida Occulta causing it the most), Cerebral Palsy, and most Neuromuscular diseases, including ALS, FA, DMD, CMD, BMD, Mitochondrial Diseases, FA, (I could go on forever there).

Neuropathy can present in different ways. The most common way is with a tingling in the hands and feet, and sometimes in the arms/hands and legs/feet. Another way that it can present is it feels like someone is taking a million needles and poking them in and out of your limbs, or like your arms/hands and feet/legs are permanently ‘asleep’. Neuropathy can also present as a loss of sensation in the upper and lower limbs.

The most common treatment for Neuropathy is medication, of which there are several types used. The most common type of medication used to treat Neuropathy is a very low dose of certain anti-depressants with the most common drug being Elavil (generic name Amitryptaline). A side effect of that type of anti-depressants is a control of Neuropathic pain. However, the type of Neuropathy that presents as a loss of sensation often has no treatment, except to cure or get under control the condition that is causing it.

Sleep apnea patients that do not have any of the above-mentioned conditions can experience Neuropathy because of a lack of oxygen flow to the brain. Most SA patients without the other conditions can often get control of the Neuropathy as soon as the SA is being properly treated.

I hope that answered your question, if not, please let me know what specific thing you would like to know and I will try and find the information for you.

Have a great day.

Nikki
