That actually depends on who you ask. Neuropathy has a diagnosis code ,actually several diagnosis codes depending on the type of neuropathy the patient is diagnosed with. For all intents and purposes for doctors and insurance companies, Neuropathy in and of itself can be either a primary condition, or a condition secondary to something else. For example, there is something called idiopathic Neuropathy, which means the patient has neuropathy secondary to no known condition. That makes it a primary problem, and is a diagnosis in and of itself. I never called it a disease, I called it a condition. There is a difference between a disease and a condition. Big difference. I have several 'diseases' and several 'conditions'. One does not indicate the other.
There are now studies showing that when you divide up Neuropathic patients, one of the most common primary conditions causing Neuropathic pain is Diabetes. However, as I stated in my original post, there are many many other things that can and do cause Neuropathic pain. It just so happens one of the most common conditions in middle aged and older adults that causes Neuropathic pain is Diabetes.
Also, there are some particular drugs that DO treat Neuropathic pain. There is no drug that was developed specifically FOR Neuropathic pain, but there are drugs that do TREAT it. For instance, Neurontin (generic name Gabapentin) is one of the most common drugs to treat it. Neurontin was developed to help treat seizures and was later found to help alleviate different types of pain, including migraines and Neuropathic pain. No, it was not developed specifically for neuropathic pain, but it does treat it. When you look up Neurontin, you will see that one of the things listed that can be treated with neurontin is nerve and neuropathic pain.
Yes, any disease of the nervous system can cause Neuropathic pain. That doesn't mean it is not a condition in and of itself.
