Good start with CPAP

Posted by Beachdragon007 on December 04, 2006 at 13:26:00:

It had been a pretty funny joke about my snoring. However, my girlfriend said "You stop BREATHING!" and she could not sleep with my snoring. The kids said they could hear me from their rooms! Girlfriend nudged me many times a night to “get you to breath”.

Girlfriend says “Please see someone about your snoring”. Girlfriend became fiance. I love her and want us both to get good sleep.

Sleep study...not fun…You have OSA…blah blah blah...

Meet with sleep doctor…

Tell me about your health?

I’m 42. I have high blood pressure. I have low testosterone. I have hypothyroid, I take Lipitor for cholesterol, and my blood works indicates I’m on a path towards type II diabetes. My primary care physician is giving me drugs for all my bad numbers.

I’m low on energy, take naps at work, am 30 lbs overweight, and irritable. I tend to drink too much espresso to stay awake. Oh yeah, my libido is dropping too.

Other than that, I’m fit as a fiddle.

“When did these items start?”

“When did you notice your snoring get bad?”

“uh…..about 10 years ago”

Sleep doctor says “I think we can help you”….. (Can you hear the angelic choirs?)…”We need to treat you, not your numbers”

"I think many of your symptoms may improve with successful CPAP treatment"

Got the equipment from local B&M. They worked with my insurance. No deductible, no out of pocket. Local guy fantastic. Showed me the maintenance and was knowledgeable.

Respironics Remstart plus M-series with humidity and heat….quiet. 8 is my setting.

Resmed Mirage swift nasal pillow. Like a plastic moustache.

I try on the equipment. I look like a gay Borg from Star Trek.

On the FIRST night, I slept 7 hours. So did the girlfriend. That’s more than enough to be grateful for. No snoring. No snoring. Holy Cow, No Snoring!

Vivid and intense dreams. Lots of ‘em. Unusual for me.
No dreams of octopus attacks ;)

Second night was Sunday. Monday at work, no naps. Energy level very good.

I’ve read about every clinical report on CPAP therapy I could find.

Perhaps I am overly optimistic, but I genuinely believe that with 6 months of CPAP, I am going to:

1) Lower my blood pressure
2) Regain natural testosterone levels
3) Lose weight (As part of a sensible diet and exercise program ;) )
4) Improve cholesterol balance
5) Lower triglycerides (Type 2 diabetes flag)

So there is the beginning.

Still have to work on:

Grinding my teeth. I made a night mouth guard from a football mouthpiece. It was $400 cheaper than my girlfriends, and it came in black.

Humidity settings: Sometimes the air seems too hot.

Air travel: I’d like to use it on trips to Europe.

I’ll keep you updated on my progress.
