I think your doctor is being a little pessimistic. I think nasal pillows work well for some people regardless of pressure.

First of all, patience is important. Many people -- myself included -- never learned to breathe properly and this hampers the successful use of any mask. Once I was able to "relax into it" (a concept that is difficult to describe) it was very easy to exhale even at a pressure of 16. Secondly, many people found it helpful to begin acclimating themselves to the machine and the mask by wearing it while watching television.

Thirdly, whatever mask or delivery system you settle on is likely to take some tweaking. Please don't give up just yet. The benefits are well worth the frustrations. Your depression and anxiety may even lessen of itself when you start getting sufficient quality sleep. (Nothing like lack of oxygen to create a generalized feeling of anxiety in the body, after all!)
