Hmmm... So I wonder if my 7% Stage 3 and 0% Stage 4 is really as grim as it appears to be, or could it be, as you've said, "not that abnormal for a night in a lab"? No way to tell, I guess.

And regarding sleep debt, perhaps you're right: the accumulative sleep debt over many years of apnic sleep takes many years of CPAP sleep to recover. Sleep researcher Dement's book on sleep focuses a lot on sleep debt and "the mortgaged mind". Interestingly, though, my sleep doctor doesn't seem concerned at all with how much sleep I get -- either with or w/out CPAP. When he explains his viewpoints, he seems to always minimize the importance of quantity while emphasizing the quality of sleep. I would think both are important, but who knows to what degree. In other words, is 6 hours of CPAP sleep equivalent to 9 hours of apnic sleep?

This doctor does admit that there is much that sleep researchers don't yet know...
