The benefits if you respond to XPAP well are phenomenal! There's nothing quite like waking up naturally after 8 hours and NOT needing to hear the alarm clock (which is one of my perks).

Realistically? I took to CPAP like a horse to water. 5 minutes and I was used to it. Or, so I thought! There was about a 3 month "psychological" period where my subconscious had to get used to the fact that there is a foreign object on my face while I'm sleeping.

While my sleep tech (who worked very closely with me and my sleep doc) SAID that this is the case, I didn't want to believe it. It still happened. After the 3rd month on CPAP, I started getting even better sleep than when I started the treatment. After a year--it's a "piece of cake". (Or so it has been quoted to me from another "hosehead".)

I remember during the 1st 3 months taking my mask off during the night on two occasions. One was while I had a dream of taking the mask off and disassembling it exactly the way the RT told me earlier that day. Guess what, I woke up not long after that and found my mask was off my face and laying right beside me disassembled just the way it happened in my dream! Not only did I have to put it back on my face, but I had to reassemble it before putting it on!

You have a few snags here and there, but the benefits FAR outweigh the detractions. And I stress 2 things with the above statements: 1) these are my experiences only, and 2) not everyone responds to XPAP treatment well.

If I were you and the doctor is saying you are a good candidate, I'd try it for at least a year. You'll find out a LOT about yourself during that time.

BTW You might wind up like Darth Vader if you DON'T try XPAP treatment.

Sleep Well and Prosper!
