Involuntary deep breaths (aka gasping) was the first symptom that alerted me to get tested for sleep apnea. One night about three years ago, I gasped for air. The gasp woke me up. I knew that I had gasped. I remember that night very well. I knew that the gasp was not normal. I got on the internet and searched "gasp" etc. At first, I though that I had a heart related problem. I got tested for that. Next, I though asthma. Got tested for that. Negative. Finally, tested for sleep apnea. Positive.

Tell your husband to take heart in that if it is sleep apnea, there is effective treatment available.

I advise him to get a full PSG test.
