I don't know all the reasons; I only know that many sleep specialists are not in favor of autopaps. One doctor told me the body adjusts better to a steady pressure. Maybe some do. I started sleeping better and I lost some weight after starting APAP, an endeavor that was unsuccessful in the two years I'd been on CPAP. I think in the early days, the technology was not as good as it is today. I'm told there's been much improvement.

I'm told some doctors will prescribe a pressure increase of one or two points without a new study, so that may be a possibility for you.

I was able to purchase my autopap on line, from a DME provider link on this site, with my CPAP prescription. Total cost, if I remember right, was around $1,000 and included software, cable, optional built-in humidifier and carrying case. The DME -- let's call him Joe -- was very helpful and supportive in providing all the needed software and documentation. Local DMEs I contacted would supply the software and documentation only to medical personnel. You may have a different experience.
