I would encourage you to investigate the possibility that your daughter might have OSA. I there are some passages in The Promise of Sleep about pediatric cases of obstructive sleep apnea. In particular, Dr. Dement mentions a Stanford Univ. research project where the researchers studied children in the town on Moscow, Idaho. The researchers found that about 10 percent of the children had full fleged obstructive sleep apnea. From this, you can see that it certainly is possible that OSA can afflict young children.

OSA and SIDS:
Dement mentions that OSA is not the major cause of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), but that it could be a cause of SIDS. He mentions that snoring or labored breathing is not normal.

One last thing, Dement writes about how dismal the knowledge of his fellow doctors about OSA is. Many doctors have only a cursory knowldege about OSA. I suggest having your child take a full PSG test to rule out OSA.

By the way, you can find a little write up on p. 186 in The Promise of Sleep. I suggest going to your local library and signing that book out. Author is William Dement. He is the founder of the Sleep Medicine faculty at Stanford University, a highly respected authority on sleep apnea and the person who invented the Apnea Index.
