I would urge you to return to CPAP and try different masks and interfaces such as the nasal pillows. Also try auto-suggestion, self-hypnosis, whatever it takes. When you become aware you've removed the mask, put it back on and work on going back to sleep. You really do not want to go where untreated sleep apnea will eventually take you, believe me. You basically lose all quality of life and a lot of brain function in addition to the physical problems. You are also at risk of falling asleep at the wheel while driving.
