The APAP machine is an "intellegent CPAP" which analyses your breathing, looks for patterns and then notices what happens just before you experience an apnea (e.g. your breathing becoming more shallow). It "learns" about your breathing and knows when you are headed toward an apnea. It is then able to respond to airflow limitations by increasing the pressure. It can often prevent an apnea from occuring before it starts. Once you are breathing comfortably, the machine can decrease the pressure to make it more easy for you to sleep. An APAP is constantly changing the pressure based on your changing needs. If I were in your situation, I would choose an APAP.
