The problem may be bacteria that can build up in the mask and hose if not kept clean. Perhaps the risk of pathogens from the CPAP and humidifier tank is nil, but masks can get pretty grubby. I recommend regular mask and hose washings, along with daily nasal irrigation. Those practices have really helped me.
