Unplug or Autostop?

I am using a Resmed S8 Elite and am new to the world of CPAP. The machine has a "smartstart system" that turns on as soon as you place the mask over your nose and turns off when you remove it. Whenever I take off the mask, it appears to run in "standby" mode. Is this deleterious to the life of the machine? I could just plug it into a power bar with a switch instead of having to completely unplug it. It seems rather wasteful to have this run all day.
