Posted by trptken on April 02, 2007 at 08:33:38:I have been a trumpet player for 46 years( I'm still not very good- thats why I keep practising/trying) although I seem to be doing a lot more lately: minimum 1.5 to 2 hrs a day practise plus performance. One of the occupational hazards of brass playing is hyper-extension of the larnyx caused by the very high pressures required for high register playing. Most of you would recognize the "gravelly" voices of Dizzie Gillespie, Miles Davis,Maynard Ferguson, Louis Armstrong and others. I haven't got that bad yet but I'm wondering if OSA difficulties are common in other brass players. The larnyx is obviously in a different position than most obstructive tissue but pressure is pressure. If it can damage one area, is it benign elsewhere.
