My opinion only, but it seems many of us slow down our breathing or hold our breath while stressed such as in pain; I know I tend to hold my breath. Professionals will undoubtedly tell you that this won't kill you; however, since every cell in our body needs oxygen in order to function, it seems reasonable to believe an abundant, fresh supply of oxygen is better than a sluggish, barely sufficient one.
Since being diagnosed with sleep apnea, I've made particular effort to be conscious of my breathing and take regular, deep breaths every time I think of it. Especially when experiencing a spike of pain, I pause, breathe deeply and relax into it -- not always easy to do -- and it mitigates the severity of the pain.
A nutritionist told me that our bodies are such complex mechanisms that one thing out of balance tends to ping pong against everything else until it's hard to know where to start reversing the tide. Start taking good care of yourself wherever the need seems to manifest itself, whether food, moderate exercise, relaxation, meditation, deep breathing, laughing at 'I Love Lucy' or whatever. Best wishes to you . . . . .
