I am new to all of this but was setup with a ResMed VPAP Adapt SV just last week and have found it to be much better than the CPAP machine on my first sleep study. I have mixed apnea and my doctor proposed we try this 'new' machine which was able to stop both my obstructive and central with an EEP(?) of 8.
The pressure is different when I inhale vs exhale but I am still in the stage of just getting used to the mask and humidity levels so I don't have too many comments yet.
The machine does seem to adjust to my breathing but if I pause too long between breaths it will increase the pressure, sort of creating a breathing pattern for you. I have not had trouble falling asleep but am waking up @ 1.5 hours after and taking the mask off due to air warmth/humidity/stuffiness which I think is just me trying to get used to the machine/mask.
Like I said, I've only been using it for a week and feel better in the mornings even though I'm getting less sleep than I used to! Best of luck to you - this seems to be a great website.
