Yes, it would be better if a person is not sick while they go through a sleep study. Almost everyone has apneas or hypopneas during sleep, but what diagnoses a person as having Obstructive Sleep Apnea is the number of apneas or hypopneas during sleep, perhaps greater than 5 per hour, depending who you talk to or where you read something about this, or apneas so bad that the body's oxygen desaturation falls below 90% for a significant amount of time. At an apnea rate of greater than 5 per hour, the apneas cause a significant amount of brain arrousals for the body to not get restful sleep in a 8 hr period.

The number of apneas a person can have in any given night changes, maybe because of what a person eats that day, or, the stress in the day they just had, and that's why a proper sleep study is almost always conducted with a questionaire, to ask the person if the cumulative suspected sleep disorder is affecting quality of life on an on-going basis. Diagnosing OSA is a paper investigation along with a test.

You mention IBS, irritable bowel syndrome (???) and caffine is most likely the cause of that.

Perhaps you just don't want to get on a CPAP machine, and I can understand that. I have no idea if you have OSA, but maybe you should start asking what will make things better for your energy the next day after a night's rest (or lack thereof). Diet can be a key factor. Many who have apnea are overweight, but some arn't, leading to a bit of a mystery. I would start to look at eating more fruits and veggies instead of meats and breads, and, giving up all dairy products and substituting Soy Milk for those with a proper vitamin pill everyday to cover for Vit D and calcium. If you do this for 90 days, you may be surprised what the outcome can be.

I don't know what advice to give you about going through with the sleep study when you are better. The choice is yours.
