Sounds familiar. I had episodes where I would wake up and jump out of bed with my heart pounding. I alternated between thinking I had some kind of heart problem and thinking I was going crazy. I searched for information online and read about sleep apnea and it occurred to me that it might be happening because I had stopped breathing and my body was panicking because I wasn't getting any oxygen. So, I talked to my primary care physician (who is great!) and told her about it. I told her that I wanted to do a sleep study. She agreed that it made sense and it turned out that I have severe sleep apnea. I've been using a CPAP for around 18 months now and I haven't had any more of those episodes.

I agree that the sleep study is tough. It's an odd environment to try to fall asleep. They may let you bring your fan if you need the white noise. In the sleep center I went to, they had a TV in the room.

It's worth following up on. Waking up in a panic is an AWFUL feeling.
